People do, they believe in a Higher Being and they can't see it. If you believe this then why not believe in the paranormal.

People have a hard time believing things that are unlikely.
Each and every ghost's lifeline can be from 1 day to 400 years...and it's the year 2007 AD now. Most of the ghosts would've gone, and most people choose not to be ghosts in the first place, just to have a nice easy death and never come to Earth in transparent form as a ghost.
Other that, or the whole of China looks up and sneezes at the same time and blasts Earth away! It's not that impossible.
